Today, the Friends of The Moncton Hospital Foundation, led by Campaign Chair Robert K. Irving, announced the Extraordinary Care Campaign with a fundraising goal of $8 million, their most ambitious campaign to date. 

The vision is to build two new state-of-the-art areas of strength that will completely change the way health care is being delivered; with the creation of a Maternity and Newborn Unit and the relocation and expansion of the Cardiac Care Unit.

"I'm pleased to announce on behalf of the Irving family and our over 15,000 J.D. Irving employees, that   J.D. Irving will contribute $1 million,” said Mr. Irving, J.D. Irving’s Co-Chief Executive Officer. “We truly believe in giving back to the communities where we live and work. The Moncton Hospital is critically important to our employees, their families and the entire community,”

“We are delighted that Robert Irving has once again agreed to take the leadership reigns for what we are proud to say is one the largest health care capital campaigns in the history of this province. Not only is he chairing the campaign, he is also serving as co-chair of the Leadership Gifts Council,” said Linda Saunders, President & CEO of Friends of The Moncton Hospital Foundation. “He has taken on the immense challenge of leading all three of the major capital fund raising campaigns for The Moncton Hospital. The first, which was launched 24 years ago, raised $3.6 million. In 2005, he led the Healthy Returns Capital Campaign bringing in $7.6 million, well beyond our $5.5 million goal.”

“We’d like to thank Mr. Irving for his impassioned leadership and for the very generous commitment to the campaign by J.D. Irving, Limited,” said Saunders.

In anticipation of today’s public launch, $5.6 million in donations and pledges have already been secured through philanthropy reaching 70% of the goal.

Mr. Irving says our fundraising, combined with the Province of New Brunswick’s multi-million dollar commitment, will allow for two critical areas at The Moncton Hospital to be brought into the twenty-first century.

CARDIAC CARE

The plan is to relocate and expand the Cardiac Intensive Care and Cardiac Stepdown Units into one larger, modern space purposely designed for optimal care and recovery. The units will be adjacent to one another to enable medical professionals to provide more seamless patient centred care while offering greater comfort and private rooms for patients and their families. A construction date for this new building has yet to be determined. 

MATERNITY AND NEWBORN UNIT

The plan is to create a more family-centred Maternity and Newborn Care Unit by expanding and enhancing the Labour and Birthing Unit (LBU), Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NNICU) and the Maternal Fetal Medicine Clinic (MFMC).

These three units will be relocated and merged into a newly constructed building between the Professional Arts Building (Arden Street) and the hospital’s main entrance on MacBeath Avenue. This new space will create more modern and individual patient rooms for all stages of birth, each with private washroom facilities. This is expected to improve outcomes for the mother, reduce the length of hospital stay, prevent the spread of infection and provide superb patient care and a safe and seamless work environment for the staff.

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit will also feature single private rooms, which provide a model of care that actively involves the parents in the care team. There will be improved patient and family privacy and confidentiality, while another initiative will control noise in the unit, a best practice in the provision of neonatal intensive care services.

In addition, the Maternal Fetal Medicine Clinic will create a comfortable and modern space for women during high-risk pregnancies. It will be adjacent to the other two units, providing the seamless continuity of Extraordinary Care that our patients and families deserve. Construction on the Maternity and Newborn Unit is expected to begin in June 2019 with occupancy in late 2021.

“Many of Atlantic Canada’s top health experts work right here at The Moncton Hospital, but currently parts of our facility don’t match the level of expertise provided by our people. We are changing that. It is exciting to be part of creating healthier futures for our families, neighbours and friends,” says Gillespie.
