New LNG Tugs Arrive for Atlantic Towing's Joint Venture in Trinidad and Tobago
ARC Towage, Atlantic Towing's joint venture, signed contracts with Netherlands shipbuilder Damen Shipyards Group in July 2013 to build four tugboats. The new building contracts are the result of a special joint venture established to provide gas terminal berthing services for a significant energy industry player in Trinidad and Tobago. The first Tug, an ASD (Azimuth Stern Drive) 2810, arrived in Trinidad earlier this month, while the second vessel is expected to arrive the first week of November.
The remaining two tugs will arrive mid-December this year. They are being built at Damen Shipyards in Galati, Romania, and will be delivered by Damen Services in Trinidad and Tobago before January 1, 2015. The vessels will provide towage services for escorting, berthing, and un-berthing LNG-vessels.
The ASD Tugs 2810 have a minimal bollard pull of 60 tonnes and a maximum speed of 12.9 knots. For operation in and around the LNG terminal, the vessels are equipped with rig savers on all engines, including remote shut off valves, remote-closing air intakes, gas detection systems, and exterior explosion-proof lighting.
