Cool Job Profile – Julien Raby, Planning Engineer

Julien Raby currently works out of the same office at Irving Equipment that he sat in as an engineering co-op student in 2005. Since then, he has become a full-time Planning Engineer and the sole pilot of the Irving Equipment drone. Julien realized the advantages of using a drone on the job at Irving Equipment to improve project efficiency and service to customers.

“It’s a useful tool for surveys and clearances; it gives us a unique perspective. It’s also a lot safer,” says Julien. “There’s a lot of research that has to go into flying the drone – you have to have special certificates with Transport Canada, register with Transport Canada, have a special document that lets you fly commercially, and you have to be insured."

Julien plans heavy lifts and the safe transportation of over-sized cargo. The drone is frequently used at site surveys to size up the location and the job. The drone has a live feed which can capture images to help obtain measurements that are required to safely execute jobs.
