Three work terms, one career path: Omar's path

For Omar Hammoud, the Transportation and Logistics Divisions Careers in Motion program (CIM) provided more than work experience. It gave him the chance to explore the different businesses across the division and connections across teams early on in his career.

Now an Associate Engineer with JDI Logistics and a recent Industrial Engineering graduate from Dalhousie University, Omar is beginning the next chapter of his journey after completing three student work terms across the JDI transportation division.

"I received the call with a job offer last September, and it felt amazing," said Omar. "Knowing I had secured a position before graduation gave me a great sense of relief and allowed me to focus on making the most of my final year at university without the stress of searching for a job."

During his time as a student, Omar completed three work terms that gave him hands-on experience and confirmed the kind of career he wanted to pursue. At Atlantic Towing, he helped update tugboat operating procedures and spent time aboard tugboats learning from crews.

“Spending time on the tugboats, meeting the crews and gaining firsthand experience of their day-to-day operations was definitely a highlight,” he said.

He later joined the business improvement team, where he led a 5S project at one of NB Southern Railways’ shops and earned his Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt certification. His final term with Harbour Development included supporting a fuel-efficiency project for the Wavemaster tugboat and gaining experience aboard a dredge.

"As a student in the program, I was proud to have the opportunity to work across three different teams within the division and contribute to a wide range of projects," he said. "The experience gave me valuable exposure to different aspects of the business and helped me develop a diverse skill set early in my career."

Now just weeks into his full-time role at JDI Logistics, Hammoud is eager to continue learning and build on the foundation created through his student work terms.

“I am looking forward to building on what I've learned, embracing new challenges, and continuing to grow both personally and professionally.” Said Omar.

For students hoping to follow a similar path, Omar’s advice is simple:

"Be open-minded and willing to step outside your comfort zone," said Omar. "You never know where those opportunities might lead. The more you put yourself out there, the more you'll gain."
