The brotherly bond of Irving Pulp & Paper’s Dan and Dennis Mott
Dan and Dennis Mott are both familiar faces around the Irving Pulp & Paper mill in west Saint John, N.B., with long careers marked by hard work, a commitment to excellence and a strong brotherly bond.
The Motts have a combined 85 years of service at Irving Pulp & Paper. Dan, now a Senior Operations Specialist, started 49 years ago in 1976, while Dennis, now Mill Manager, followed in his brother’s footsteps 36 years ago in 1989.
Despite their 10-year age difference, the Mott brothers have followed a similar career trajectory. They’re both proud graduates of the Power Engineering program at NBCC and started out in the steam plant as power engineers, working their way up to where they are today.
Dennis never imagined he’d end up working alongside his older brother at the pulp mill. However, the pull of power engineering and the challenge of working in an industrial environment, combined with the inspiration he drew from Dan’s enthusiasm about his career, proved too strong.
“I was drawn to power engineering when I had the opportunity to tour the mill as a student," Dennis said. "It looked very challenging and exciting – turbines, boilers, producing power, and all the machinery. Dan was thriving in his role, and that was very inspiring."
Now, Dan and Dennis continue to share a passion for industrial processes. It’s a demanding field, and Dennis noted the pair share a commitment to safety as well, one that is a top priority every single day.
For both brothers, the pulp mill has become a second family.
“We work with a fantastic team of people every day,” Dennis said. “Irving Pulp & Paper is a family-owned business that offers a more personal, hands-on approach, with a strong sense of tradition, loyalty, and long-term vision that align with our values.”
