Students gains hands-on experience at NBM Railways
Through his co-op placement at NBM Railways, high school student Chris Edsall was able to see firsthand how a safety-first focus plays a role in every job across the industry.
As a student in the PALS En Route to Success co-op program at Saint John High School, Chris joined NBM Railways this summer as a labourer. The program allowed him to gain hands-on experience, develop workplace skills and explore the railroad industry, all while earning credits towards his high school diploma.
As he worked alongside coworkers on a variety of tasks, he learned the importance of communication and teamwork in a busy workplace. It was in these areas, Chris said, where he experienced the most growth.
On one project, Chris helped to build shop grates designed to reduce tripping hazards and improve workplace safety. Part of a larger effort, the project demonstrated how every role contributes to supporting safe and efficient operations.
"What stood out most to me was the people," said Chris. "Everyone was welcoming, supportive and willing to help me learn."
Beyond the work itself, Chris said he enjoyed staying active, learning new skills and taking on something different from his usual routine, surrounded by a positive and hardworking workplace culture.
Looking back, Chris said the experience gave him a new perspective and valuable lessons he will carry forward into future education and career opportunities.
"You get what you give. Work hard, stay positive, and good things will come in return,” Chris said.
