Real projects, big impact: Student roles turn into full-time careers in the JDI Sawmill Division

Months before completing his degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of New Brunswick, Nathaniel Dryden already had his post-university career secured.

Now working in process engineering at Sproule Lumber in Truro, N.S., Nathaniel is building off the hands-on experience he received through his three student work terms with J.D. Irving, Limited’s Sawmill Division.

“It was rewarding that I ended up doing these work terms and then received an offer before I finished school,” Nathaniel said.

Nathaniel always had a passion for math and building things, so an engineering degree made sense. As a student, he worked in a divisional role with the company, allowing him to gain exposure to many different aspects of the business.

“I found Sawmills the most engaging because it gave me the opportunity to get boots on the ground, see what was actually happening, gain hands-on experience, and make a real impact,” he said.

Even as a student, Nathaniel was given opportunities to work on projects with significant impact. During his work terms, he was part of a team that overhauled the division’s inventory practices.

Now in his full-time role, Nathaniel continues to assist with projects at the mill and lends a hand with the maintenance team. Every day is different.

“The people I work with are very supportive and are helping me, especially at the start. They’ve been very accepting to someone like me, coming fresh out of school. It’s been nice having that support system as well as being trusted and given projects that have real impact right out of the gates,” he said.

So far, Nathaniel says his favourite part is how his workplace empowers and trusts everyone to take responsibility and ownership of their work.

“You know all your co-workers, all their bosses and all their bosses, and you get to meet a lot of people in different fields,” he said. “It’s an environment where you’re always learning and leaning in, which keeps you mentally engaged as well.”
