Student program leads to career success

Katya Iatrou is a Dalhousie University graduate and former Business Analyst student with JDI IT now working full time with the division. Katya credits her success in her new role to her two student work terms where she focused on the Irving Shipbuilding River Class Destroyer Program.

Since starting on full time in September 2023, Katya says she’s been able to build off the skills she gained as a student.

“Shipbuilding is complex, fast paced, and required me to learn an enormous amount of technical knowledge,” Katya said. “Having two work terms under my belt helped me build this knowledge early which was a huge benefit when I returned full time.”

As her responsibilities evolved and by gaining more exposure and knowledge related to her role, Katya has been able to take on additional responsibilities as a Business Analyst within her group, where a major project involved enabling critical planning processes related to the River Class Destroyer Program.

A key aspect within the J.D. Irving, Limited student program is exposure to the company’s many diverse positions and divisions. This includes student tours throughout work terms and internal career fairs.

Katya said the tours and workshops provided to students were a highlight of her own work terms.

In her full-time role, Katya said she’s enjoyed “the opportunity to dig into large scale initiatives that provide an enormous amount of value to the organization.”

That and working “alongside such an extremely talented group of colleagues,” she added.
