Meet Irving Equipment's Newest Red Seal Mobile Crane Operator

Mark Thompson joined Irving Equipment as a Crane Operator Apprentice in September 2021, and three and a half years later, we’re celebrating his achievement of becoming a Red Seal Mobile Crane Operator.

He took the initiative to join the International Union of Operating Engineers Training Institute as a Mobile Crane Operator, with the goal of building a career with Irving Equipment. Born and raised in Saint John, he was thrilled to be selected to work with the Irving Equipment team during a refinery shutdown in his hometown. Once that project finished, he then returned to Irving Equipment the following spring to continue his apprenticeship. Successful Red Seal Crane Operators must complete a minimum of 5,400 hours consisting of classroom learning and on-the-job equipment training. The 5,400 hours are broken into three blocks, all taught by Irving Equipment’s own Red Seal Mobile Crane Operators teachers!

When asked why he chose Irving Equipment, Mark's answer was simple: “Irving Equipment is the place to work – you are proud to say you work there. The variety of exposure across different industries keeps it interesting and exciting. At Irving Equipment, you’re part of the project from the very beginning. It’s a proud sense of accomplishment when you see the job progression and can drive by a building years later, knowing you were part of the team that built it.” Mark is proud to have obtained his Red Seal but will never forget the feeling of progression. “Starting as an apprentice and learning each piece of equipment, then moving onto the next piece is extremely rewarding,” said Mark.

“Irving Equipment provided me with great operators over the years who mentored me and offered various opportunities to learn and develop as an apprentice,” he said. “If you’re looking to join a collaborative team that is willing to mentor and guide you throughout your career – choose Irving Equipment. The team here is always willing to share their knowledge and that helps make it a great place to work.”
