J.D. Irving, Limited sponsors 4th annual Supply Chain Case Competition at the University of New Brunswick

Students at the University of New Brunswick had a chance to put their learning into action at the annual Supply Chain Management Case Competition sponsored J.D. Irving, Limited this month.

Seven teams made up of 21 students in Dr. Bharat Verma’s Supply Chain Management class went head-to-head, applying what they’ve learned in the classroom to a real-world scenario developed by the JDI Supply Chain Division.

It marked the fourth year in a row that the Supply Chain Division and the university’s Faculty of Business Management partnered on the event, which aims to provide an experiential learning opportunity for students.

During the competition, students had to carefully consider the details of the given case and come up with a set of recommendations that they presented to a panel of judges from JDI.

"Business education should have a strong hands-on learning component similar to Medical and Law education,” said Dr. Verma.  “The J.D. Irving, Limited Supply Chain Case Competition fills in this gap by providing a real-world problem-solving component for students. I am glad to see that students rose to their highest level of competence to apply what they learned and were left with a feeling of accomplishment."

In the end, students Jordi O'Brien, Nazim Patel and Victoria Huet took home first prize while the team comprising Sakshit Dabla, Roch Pelletier and Ashley Mongeon placed second.

“It was great to see the different disciplines being used to solve the Supply Chain Case Competition,” said Brendan Roy, Supply Chain Director for J.D. Irving, Limited. “We saw creative, unique and practical approaches from Business, Science and Engineering students. It was a great show of teamwork and a true representation of the real-world work environment.”

The Supply Chain Division is proud to support the next generation of Supply Chain professionals in this way.
