Island Gas’s Commitment to Road Safety

As Road Safety Week brings attention to the importance of safer roads and responsible travel, Island Gas continues to build on a significant achievement: more than 12 years without a lost time incident. This milestone reflects a strong commitment to safety in an operation where transporting natural gas on public roads between New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island is part of everyday work.

For Island Gas, safety is not viewed as a single accomplishment, but as a guiding principle engrained in daily decisions.

“Safety is the number one priority at Island Gas,” said Ben Fraser, Operations Supervisor. “It’s embedded in every task, every decision and every kilometre travelled. Just as importantly, safety means everyone is heard, and concerns are addressed effectively and efficiently.”

That commitment is lived most visibly by drivers who operate on the road every day. Glenn MacWilliams, a driver with Island Gas, said he is proud to work for a company that truly values safety and brings together people who are dedicated to doing things right. From his first day on the job, he was taught that handling natural gas requires a mindset rooted in two priorities: getting it right the first time and always putting safety first so everyone goes home safe.

Driver Gary Wilkie emphasized the importance of discipline and routine in maintaining safety. He explained the need to repeatedly check equipment and to complete a thorough 360-degree walk-around before every trip.

“Once on the road, staying alert, keeping your distance and practicing defensive driving makes all the difference,” Gary said.

Additionally, Island Gas operates modern trailers with advanced safety features. Trucks are equipped with moose racks and enhanced lighting to help address wildlife and visibility risks on the road. These upgrades, combined with training and driver experience, help create confidence behind the wheel.

Island Gas’s commitment to safety extends beyond its own operations through regular collaboration with emergency responders, including tabletop exercises with provincial partners along its transportation routes, and hands‑on training with fire departments.

Road Safety Week is a reminder that safer roads are built through consistency, learning and continuous improvement. Island Gas remains committed to protecting its employees and the communities it serves and ensuring everyone goes home safely today and every day.
