Hazen Profile

Hazen Grant spent his childhood on or around the water. Hailing from the Kennebecasis Valley in New Brunswick, he’d sail on his family's sailboat and teach lessons at the local yacht club. So it was no surprise when he decided to make a career of it, one that has taken him on a voyage with Atlantic Towing from Navigation Cadet to Halifax Port Superintendent.

To start, Hazen continued his education through the Nova Scotia Community College in Marine Transportation/Naval Technology. But his career really began with Atlantic Towing in 2016 as a Navigation Cadet on the Atlantic Condor, a platform supply vessel previously owned by Atlantic Towing. There, Hazen was committed to the role, ensuring he completed his sea-time in order to earn his Watchkeeping Mate Certificate.

Hazen followed this up by working as a deckhand and 3rd mate on various offshore vessels in Newfoundland and Nova Scotia, before receiving a permanent position as 2nd Officer on the Condor in 2018. He spent most of his time offshore working on the Atlantic Condor until 2020, when he took a brief leave to work in subsea construction offshore Africa.

Hazen then returned to Atlantic Towing to join the Ports and Coastal team. He worked as the Mate on the Atlantic Cedar and Atlantic Elm before making Master on the Atlantic Larch in 2021. In that role, he worked on various jobs, including escorting large container ships into the Port of Halifax.

In mid-2024, Hazen moved into his current role as Halifax Port Superintendent, where he now looks after the tugs operating in the Halifax Harbour.

"Transitioning from ship-based to shore-based has been an exciting challenge and I look forward to where my career takes me from here," said Hazen about his new role.
