Harbour Development Engineer obtains P.Eng
Darien Edison first realized he wanted to be an engineer at 10 years old after taking part in a young engineers program offered at his elementary school. He’s now made that dream a reality, obtaining his Professional Engineering Designation this year.
“I’ve always been fascinated by how things worked and how that knowledge can be used to create positive change and meaningful impact,” says Darien. “That curiosity continues to drive me today.”
Darien started with JDI in 2018 as a Careers in Motion (CIM) student with the Transportation and Logistics Division, gaining experience with RST Transport and Atlantic Towing. After graduating with a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of New Brunswick, Darien was hired on full time in the CIM graduate program, working again with Atlantic Towing and NBM Railways. Darien then joined Harbour Development in 2023 and has been there ever since in a maintenance and reliability role.
“My favourite part of working with Harbour Development is finding ways to solve challenging and complex repairs, getting to collaborate with our team and often affiliates to design and execute on custom solutions,” says Darien. “Working in the marine and dredging industry is also exciting!”
After four years of full-time work experience, Darien has achieved his Professional Engineering Designation. “Earning my Professional Engineer Designation is incredibly gratifying - it marks the culmination of years of hard work, from university through to my career thus far.”
Outside of work, Darien also remains involved in his local community, teaching dance classes and volunteering and serving on the board of directors for Big Brothers Big Sisters Saint John. Darien was even named Volunteer of the Year with Big Brothers Big Sisters for 2024.
“I’m deeply thankful for the mentors who guided and supported me.” Says Darien. “I’d like to think my ten-year-old self, along with my family and friends who kept me grounded, would be proud of how far I’ve come.”
