Evan Johnston: NBCC Development Scholarship Recipient
Born and raised in Miramichi, New Brunswick, Evan Johnston is a 2023 recipient of the Pulp & Paper New Brunswick Community College Development Scholarship. An active member of his local community and avid outdoorsman, Evan has recently completed his first year of power engineering at NBCC. This summer, he joined the team at Irving Pulp & Paper where he is putting his theory to use and getting hands-on experience.
“Learning to troubleshoot real, hands-on problems makes it easier to grasp concepts I’ve learned in the classroom by observing the processes in action," says Johnston. "It is an exceptional learning experience seeing theories and systems from my textbooks come to life!"
Johnston looks back on one of his favourite classes — Power Theory — and appreciates how his work term has allowed him to apply this knowledge to real-life situations and practices.
With only a month remaining in his term, Johnston reflects on his time at the mill and notes that one of his biggest takeaways is “learning to be very organized while doing your daily tasks and making sure you ask lots of questions to make the most out of your experience and learn as much as you can."
