Developing future talent through co-op placements and work-integrated learning
J.D. Irving, Limited (JDI) is helping to develop the future workforce, one student work term at a time.
Each term, students from various disciplines and backgrounds join JDI, gaining the opportunity to apply their academic knowledge in a professional setting. Whether in HR, marketing, operations, finance or engineering, students are given real responsibilities, collaborate with teams across the organization and contribute to key initiatives.
Remi Levesque is one of them. An engineering student at the University of New Brunswick, his co-op term at NBM Railways as an Associate Engineer has been an exciting and eye-opening experience.
“I was really into trains when I was a kid, so when I walked in on my first day, it was really neat,” he said.
Throughout his term, Remi has worked closely with the Maintenance of Way team to streamline rail and tie replacement tasks. He’s also collaborated with the safety team to standardize safety tool lists and even had the opportunity to ride in locomotives.
“Day to day, it changes – I get to see a lot of different things that I wouldn’t see in my everyday life,” Remi said. “When I go out in the field, I get a feel for what the people around me are doing. It’s such a great experience.”
Last summer alone, JDI hired 298 university students for summer work terms. The company recognizes the value that students bring to the workplace, not only as future professionals but as meaningful contributors to the business today. Through its co-op and work-integrated learning (WIL) programs, the company provides students with hands-on experiences that allow them to develop critical skills while working on real projects that make an impact.
The company is also committed to ensuring that every student’s experience extends beyond a typical placement. Through mentorship, networking opportunities and professional development, students gain practical knowledge and confidence to help shape their future careers. Many former co-op students have transitioned into full-time roles within the company, further growing their careers within the organization.
Students looking for a co-op experience with JDI are encouraged to keep an eye on the company’s careers site for upcoming fall co-op postings.
