Careers in Motion: Our Student Experiences - Abigail Cramm

Abigail Cramm is a recent Civil Engineering graduate from Memorial University in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador. She started at JDI as a Careers in Motion student with NBM Railways for two co-op terms in her third and fourth years of study. Abigail graduated in June and returned to JDI as an Associate Engineer with Harbour Development. The Careers in Motion program with the Transportation and Logistics Division allows students and recent grads to complete work terms with multiple businesses so they can determine which industry their skill set best applies to. We spoke with Abigail about her experience.

How did you get involved with the Careers in Motion program?

When I first applied to the railway, I had no idea about JDI’s student program or the Careers in Motion program. Once I started and heard others peoples' experiences with the program, I was hooked! It was a big deciding factor in me wanting to come back for a second work term and eventually a new grad position. It seemed like a really great opportunity to be able to experience such a variety of companies and gain experience in multiple fields throughout the T&L Division.

How have you been able to apply your current skill set and expand upon new skills in your position?

My current role allows me to utilize all the project management, communication, problem solving and creativity skills that I was taught throughout my degree and co-op experience. I also get to utilize technical knowledge by working on projects that have geotechnical aspects. My favourite part about this role is that I am constantly presented with opportunities to learn and grow my skill set.

What is your favourite part about the Careers in Motion program and working at J.D. Irving?

My favourite part of the Careers in Motion program is all the experiences I’ve been able to have. Throughout my time in the program — both as a student and new grad — I have driven a tugboat, ridden trains, worked on dredges and toured approximately ten different JDI businesses, the list is never ending! All these experiences have given me valuable insights into the businesses and endless learning opportunities. Through this, I’ve also had many networking opportunities and have met so many people across JDI.
