Building a Culture of Safety: Tim McNamara and Gulf Operators' Bootcamp Journey
At Gulf Operators, safety starts on day one and that’s exactly what new hires experience at Gulf’s Bootcamp. This hands-on training program is designed to prepare employees for success on the job site from the very beginning.
The Bootcamp is led by Tim McNamara, a Certified Heavy Equipment Journeyman who has been with Gulf for 26 years. Born and raised in Grand Bay-Westfield, N.B., Tim began his career as a Heavy Equipment Operator, working with dozers, excavators and loaders across various project sites. Today, he proudly works as a Heavy Equipment Trainer, helping new employees develop the skills and confidence needed for safe, efficient machine operation.
“I take pride in helping new employees build the confidence and habits they need to succeed,” says Tim. “It’s rewarding to be part of their first steps into a career that’s meant so much to me.”
Bootcamp is held in Saint John at one of Gulf's quarries. The training is intentionally small and focused, with six to 12 participants and one instructor for every three attendees. Participants carry out a variety of tasks with safety as the top priority. The program covers essential skills such as trenching, backfilling, pump setup, spotting, silt fence installation and safe use of tools like the Hilti Gun and compactors.
Tim has been involved in Gulf’s Bootcamp since it began in Spring 2024 and has played a key role in shaping and evolving the program. Designed to build both technical skills and a strong sense of culture of teamwork and safety, Gulf's Bootcamp has already trained over 60 employees since its inception.
Bootcamp is more than just training; it’s the foundation of Gulf Operators’ safety culture. Whether you're a new labourer or a lead hand, Gulf’s Bootcamp is your first step toward a safe, successful career with Gulf Operators.
