50 years on the railway: Mark Green

Mark Green’s railway career has spanned decades, crossed multiple roles and moved through operational changes, but most of all it can be measured by the many team members he’s helped mentor and train. He’s now passing the torch on to the next generation of New Brunswick Southern Railway operating employees as he retires this month after 50 years.

Mark began his career in 1976, starting out working on track maintenance crews across southern New Brunswick. While he spent a short time stationed in Fredericton, most of his career was based in Saint John.

In 1997, he was presented with the opportunity to train as a conductor. While he knew the transition would be challenging, Mark saw the role as a worthwhile step and decided to take the opportunity.

Mark quickly found his footing with encouragement from coworkers. Their support helped convince him to stay the course, a decision Mark says he remains grateful for.

J.D. Irving, Limited acquired the railway in 1995. As the organization evolved, new opportunities opened up that hadn’t existed before, Mark said.

In 2002, he advanced again, moving into his current role as a locomotive engineer. “In the past, interdepartmental movement was rare,” said Mark.

After 50 years, one of Mark’s favorite memories came recently. When NBSR partnered with CPKC in 2024 to bring a holiday train to town, it was Mark who operated the NBSR locomotive that hauled it. The community spirit that day still stands out to him.

“The holiday train was an event I never thought I would see in my life,” said Mark. “I was proud to be part of such a spectacular community event.”

For Mark, it’s the people he’s worked with along the way that especially stand out. He noted in particular his coworkers Trent O’Neill and Peter Lohnes who encouraged him to take the leap into a conductor role almost 30 years ago.

“As I wrap up this journey and begin another, I would like to thank Ron Campbell, Operations Supervisor, and former General Manager Steve Wills, for believing in me and pushing me along the way,” he added.

Congratulations, Mark, on a remarkable career and thank you for your dedication and contributions over the decades.
