Doaktown Sawmill Expands Product Line and Grows Jobs

DOAKTOWN, NB:  The JDI team at the Doaktown Value Added Center is excited to announce the launch of a new product line this summer.  To meet growing consumer demand, the mill will start producing rough sawn board stained to give a weathered "barn board" look.

Irving Shipbuilding and the Marine Environmental Observation Prediction & Response Network (MEOPAR) are providing $137,600 in research support for Memorial University of Newfoundland.  The funding is focused on the creation of an effective monitoring of marine plastics which will guide future responses to this important pollution issue.

 

St. Francis Xavier Students Participate in JDI Case Competition

Antigonish, NS: The Operations Management class at St. Francis Xavier University joined the over 3,800 students in Atlantic Canada who have competed in JDI Case Competitions over the past 8 years. Students are given a real business problem and work in groups to present recommendations and solutions to JDI executives and recruiters.

On Thursday, April 14th Kim Powell, Production Planner for Irving Paper, was recognized by the City of Saint John as an outstanding volunteer.  Kim was nominated by Jennifer Walsh, second grade teacher at Prince Charles School. As part of the PALS (Partners Assisting Local Schools) program, Kim has been reading to Jennifer’s students at Prince Charles School every Friday afternoon for the past 14 years.

Cool Job Profile – Julien Raby, Planning Engineer

Julien Raby currently works out of the same office at Irving Equipment that he sat in as an engineering co-op student in 2005. Since then, he has become a full-time Planning Engineer and the sole pilot of the Irving Equipment drone. Julien realized the advantages of using a drone on the job at Irving Equipment to improve project efficiency and service to customers.
