J.D. Irving, Limited (JDI) is proud to partner with Seaside Park Elementary School to provide the required materials for their new school garden project.
The lumber used to build the garden boxes along with the soil were donated by the Sawmills Division and Kent Building Supplies donated the hardware.
"Seaside Park Elementary is our neighbour and we appreciate the talented students at Harbour View High who helped build these garden boxes. It is very rewarding to support the hands-on learning that is happening at both schools. These students are the environmental stewards, professionals and tradespeople of the future," said Brett Anderson, JDI Sawmill Division.
Students from Harbour View High School helped build the garden boxes and grew the seedlings in their greenhouse. The Harbour View High students came to Seaside Park Elementary for the official planting day and helped the younger students.
"Projects like this are rarely a reality without the support of PALS and community partners," said Michelle Deschênes, Principal at Seaside Park Elementary School.
Seaside Park Elementary has a gardening club that will take care of the school's new garden. The school is planning on having their students' families volunteer to look after the garden throughout the summer months.
PALS (Partners Assisting Local Schools) is an internationally and nationally honoured anti-poverty initiative, founded in 2000 by Mr. J.K. Irving in partnership with the Anglophone South School District. PALS has grown to over 30 schools, more than 150 partners, and hundreds of volunteers throughout the province.
PALS partners work together with participating schools to make a positive impact on students’ lives. Support is given in many areas including mentoring, reading, math, work placements, sports, music and much more.
